Flying High | Jerina Mac Photography

I got a phone call a few weeks ago with a request from a mom asking if I would be interested in documenting her soon to be 10 year old son’s birthday surprise.  After she explained the surprise I quickly responded with a “yes”.

Bi-Plane Rides  Chase’s parents were on a road trip driving around  the Atlanta area and saw a sign for “bi-plane rides”.  Chase’s mom, Christina, told her husband that it was a great idea for Chase since he really loved airplanes.  The family has a few friends that are private pilots, so they were going to ask one of them.  L.D., Chase’s dad, had the idea of asking Scott Martin since he knew he owned his own plane.

To get a sense of who Chase is, he recently told his mom he wants to fly airplanes in the military and he wants to be an engineer. (What big dreams and ideas for a 10 year old…I was impressed.)  Chase began flying Radio Controlled (R/C) airplanes a little over a year ago when he was introduced to it by Christina’s family friend.  He has always loved airplanes, old cars, dirt bikes, or anything with an engine.  He gets that from his dad.  And, there’s a lot of aviation talk around the house because his dad works at Gulfstream Aerospace.  You see, his dad was in the Air Force and was in Aircraft Maintenance.  He now works at Gulfstream and has various jobs, his most current is working in Flight Test.  And, Chase’s grandfather used to fly Cessnas, a very small passenger plane, when he was younger.

1943 Stearman and owner, Pilot Scott Martin  Mr. Martin, an experimental test pilot for Gulfstream, is known to be a “hundred pound brain”.  If you’re a parent and you’re going to trust one guy to take your ten year old child up in a vintage open cockpit bi-plane, Scott Martin is your guy, according to Chase’s mom and dad.  Mr. Martin was the 2016 recipient of the Ivan C. Kincheloe test pilot award, which recognizes outstanding professional accomplishments in the area of flight test.

Through the eyes of Chase  Chase was excited and said the ride was “awesome”.  He was a little queasy after the flight because Mr. Martin did some loops and barrel rolls.  It took a little bit before he was ready to eat. (I get sick just riding in the back of a car)  Chase cannot wait to learn to fly!  His parents told him if he earns really good grades, keeps out of trouble and maintained the passion for flying, they would pay for him to get his private license.  His dad will most likely go through the process with him.
